Digital Storytelling in European Contexts
I know only one thing about the technology that awaits us in the
future: we will find ways to tell stories with it.
Jason Ohler: Digital storytelling in the classroom
Digital storytelling combines the tradition of storytelling with contemporary technical tools: Using a standard camera, computer, voice recorder and software practically everyone can write, tell, produce and publish their own story. Digital stories allow individuals as well as pre-defined target groups to give others an insight in their everyday lives, their convictions, their goals or their concerns. Digital storytelling is a productive method to teach students of all ages not only to develop skills in the use of a variety of digital tools but also to voice their point of view, to enter a (virtual) discussion and to try and find mutual ways of communication with others. Storytelling has always provided a good means to share experiences, to distribute what’s new, to maintain tradition and to promote developments. Digital storytelling means that the boundaries between people disappear: It matters less where you are at the time you are telling your story. It also matters less who you are and what you are trained for: Provided with the few necessary technical tools one needs for a digital story, anyone can participate.

The project DeTALES employs the method of digital storytelling to help participants in familiarising with other European cultures and ways of life. The project supports the process of European integration and includes all target groups: people from long-standing member states as well as from new member states and candidates. DeTALES shows you how to tell your story and how to listen to others. It addresses especially those who are less likely to be involved in adult education activities: low-skilled adults, seniors and mature employees.
